In 2010, Thunderclap Newman was reformed with a new lineup consisting of original member Andy Newman and newer members Mark Brzezicki, Nick Johnson, Josh Townshend, and Tony Stubbings. hit in 1970 with "Accidents" and released the critically acclaimed album, "Hollywood Dream," before disbanding in 1971. This counterculture classic, which has been covered by numerous bands and artists over the years, was featured in "The Magic Christian" (1969) and several other movie soundtracks and has also been used extensively in British TV shows and ads. Pop/Rock charts in 1969 with "Something In The Air," which became a Top 40 hit. Additional touring members included Roger Felice (drums), Ronnie Peel (bass guitar), James "Jim" Pitman-Avery (bass guitar), and McCulloch's elder brother Jack (drums). Townshend produced, recorded, arranged, and played bass guitar for the band under the name, Bijou Drains. Keen (MaMarch 12, 2002) wrote and sang lead vocals on the song for which the band is best known, "Something In The Air," which topped the U.K. Key members included John "Speedy" Keen (vocals, drums, guitar), guitarist/bassist Jimmy McCulloch (JSeptember 27, 1979), and Dixieland jazz pianist Andy "Thunderclap" Newman (NovemMarch 29, 2016). "Something in the Air" has appeared on the soundtracks of the films The Magic Christian (1969), Almost Famous (2000), The Girl Next Door (2004), and The Strawberry Statement (1970) plus many TV advertisements including Vodaphone and British Airways.Thunderclap Newman was a short-lived British rock band formed in 1969 by Pete Townshend of The Who and Kit Lambert, a producer and record label owner who was also one of The Who's managers. Eventually a line-up, augmented by Jim Pitman-Avory on bass and McCulloch's elder brother Jack on drums was formed. Townshend produced the single “Something In The Air”, arranged its strings, played its bass under the pseudonym Bijou Drains, recorded it at his house and hired for it eccentric GPO engineer and jazz pianist Andy 'Thunderclap' Newman and 15-year-old Glaswegian guitarist Jimmy McCulloch. I was friends for a while with Speedy Keen back in the 1970s when he was hanging out at Dierdrie Redgrave's place in Earl's Court. 'Something in the Air' was always one of my favourite tracks of all time and is still an uplifting song. Sadly both Speedy and Jimmy have passed on - Speedy in 2002 aged 56: Jimmy in 1979, aged just 26. The original band was Andy, John "Speedy" Keen and Jimmy McCulloch.
